DSCMHS Brings Mental Health Support to the Forefront at NCD Youth Summit 2024
Mental health took center stage at the 2024 NCD Youth Summit & Expo, with the Directorate for Social Change and Mental Health Services (DSCMHS) leading critical conversations on youth wellbeing.
Held from August 11–14, 2024, at the APEC Haus in Port Moresby, the summit brought together over 200 young people from across the National Capital District, along with leaders, experts, and representatives from UN agencies and other organizations. Under the theme “Empowering Youths for a Better and Progressive NCD,” the event was an initiative of NCD Governor Powes Parkop, designed to align with the United Nations International Youth Day.
A Vital Voice for Youth Mental Health
DSCMHS was a key participant, reinforcing its mission to foster a mentally healthy nation. Dr. Uma Ambi, Director of DSCMHS, underscored that mental health is deeply connected to physical health—and that young people must feel empowered to seek help.
“Life happens daily and there are disappointments or disparities in life that warrant a negative response, but one must always learn to control emotions and not act immediately on them,” Dr. Ambi told attendees.
She encouraged youths to speak openly about their struggles and seek counseling, noting that DSCMHS is planning to establish wellness centers where people can walk in and receive support.
Addressing Key Challenges
Topics covered by DSCMHS officers included substance abuse, disaster and trauma response, and stress management—all immediate factors contributing to mental instability among young people. Dr. Ambi also highlighted that DSCMHS has received approval from the Department of Education to conduct regular mental health awareness programs in schools.
The summit provided a vital platform for youth to connect, collaborate, and learn from one another. DSCMHS’s presence reinforced that mental health is not a peripheral issue—it is central to building a progressive, resilient, and inclusive future for Papua New Guinea.
Looking Ahead
DSCMHS remains committed to breaking down stigma and expanding access to mental health services across the country. As Dr. Ambi emphasized, seeking help is a sign of strength, and no young person should suffer in silence.
The 2024 NCD Youth Summit was more than an event—it was the beginning of a movement, and DSCMHS is proud to be part of that journey.
